"As depressing an idea as that is," Gordon replied wearily, "anything is better than whatever that madwoman is up to."

"Who has your attention more than me right now?" the Joker asked Gordon suddenly, reaching over with his foot and tipping Gordon's head up with his shoe.

"No one, my liege. You are literally the only person in the room," Gordon said. Weird thing to ask. He hoped this was just a power play.

"Then who is this madwoman you speak of?" The Joker asked, leaning in closer to Gordon's trapped face.

Gordon raised an eyebrow. This produced little effect because he was facedown on the ground, but still. "The woman who now has my job? You really don't get out, do you? She's the reason you're bored, my friend. I had thought she'd paid you to get me out of the picture. With all this time to think, I thought I'd figured it out." Gordon reevaluated the situation for a moment, then asked, "So why did you kidnap me?"

The Joker growled in a dangerous way. "Let's never talk about her," he spat, aggressively shoving Gordon's face away. He stood then, and began to push Gordon around. "Because, my dear Gordon, I like chaos, and you do not, and I wanted to see what would happen if you were gone. I liked watching how fast your little police force crumbled into dust."

"And yet, if I'm not much mistaken, she's taken complete control. That doesn't sound like chaos to me. And you're bored, which also doesn't happen if the whole world has fallen to pieces." Gordon sighed happily. "At least it's not my problem anymore."

"I said let's not talk about her," the Joker reminded Gordon, with a strong kick in the stomach.

Gordon grunted and was silent.

The Joker pulled Gordon's head up by the hair and tapped a knife against his chin. "The real question is why you're still fighting. All those pushups, and planning, what exactly are you waiting for, Commissioner? What hope do you have left?"

"The only hope I have left, which is to maybe leave this place someday. And when I do, I'll be ready." There was a steady calmness in Gordon's voice that pleased him. He felt nothing.
